Have you conquered these 2 Purpose killers?
For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:22-24, New American Standard Bible)
My morning devotion focused on this passage of Scripture. While meditating on it, it occurred to me that the Christian Church is still filled with modern-day Jews and Greeks. It also occurred to me that these two groups of people represent two major barriers to fulfilling purpose–unbelief and high-mindedness (or presumption and lack of dependency on God).
In Paul’s day, the Jews and Greeks were people who would not believe unless they saw, and who thought that by their mental and philosophical searching they could figure out God. One set of people struggled to have faith in God and the other had a misplaced sense of faith in themselves.
What Paul, the author of the letter to the church at Corinth, explains is that Jews are always asking for a token or a sign because of their unbelief and familiarity. They will not believe unless they see.
Greeks are always seeking after wisdom, thinking that by their tiny minds they can figure out God. Some even feel that they don’t need God and that God is for the weak-minded.
But we must preach the authentic gospel. It is one that can never leave out the bloody cross on which Jesus was crucified and the truth that his death was necessary for the remission of our sins. It was necessary to negate our enemy status against God.
To the unbelieving Jews, believing that a mere carpenter from a “hood” town like Nazareth became the key to their salvation was and still is, a stumbling block. To high-minded, educated, philosophical Greeks this concept was and still is, foolishness.
However, for everyone that God has called and predestined to partake of His life–no matter what ethnic background they come from–Christ dying on the Cross is their source of power and it was the wisdom of God that laid out this perfect plan of salvation.
Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. Our purpose is linked to the Cross. Our life (our purpose) is hidden in Christ and it is our faith in Him that leads us on a path of purpose discovery.
